iTerm2 vs Termio: Do You Still Need an SSH Manager on macOS?
iTerm2 is the best terminal emulator on macOS. Here is where profiles and ssh config stop scaling, and what an SSH connection manager adds.
Every iTerm2 vs Termio comparison you will read has the same structural problem: iTerm2 is very good, it is free, it has been refined for over a decade, and most Mac developers have no reason to leave it.
So let us not pretend the conclusion is in doubt. If you are happy in iTerm2, stay. This article is about a narrower question — the one that actually decides it: at what point does managing servers through profiles and `~/.ssh/config` stop being enough?
For a lot of people the answer is never. For some it was two years ago and they have been working around it since.
What iTerm2 does that nothing else does
Worth being specific, because vague praise helps nobody:
- Depth of emulation. Instant replay, semantic history, triggers that fire on output patterns, badges, timestamps per line. Nothing else on macOS has this much surface.
- tmux integration.
tmux -CCturns remote tmux windows into native iTerm2 tabs. If you work on machines where sessions must survive a dropped connection, this alone is a reason to keep iTerm2 installed forever. - Shell integration and marks. Jumping between command prompts with
Cmd+Shift+↑, and knowing where the previous output began, is a small thing you use fifty times a day. - The Python API. A real scripting surface, not a config file. If you have automated your terminal, you have almost certainly done it here.
- A password manager backed by the macOS Keychain, which is the right place for it.
- It is free and open source, maintained with unusual consistency by a small team.
Termio does not beat iTerm2 as a terminal emulator, and we are not going to claim it does. Different problem.
The honest counter-argument: iTerm2 already does some of this
Most comparison pages skip this part, which is why they read like brochures. iTerm2 has more connection-management capability than people give it credit for.
Profiles can be SSH connections. Set the profile's command to ssh prod-db-01, give it a tag, a colour, a font, and you have a named connection you can open with Cmd+O and two keystrokes. Colour-coding production red is the oldest and still one of the best safety practices in this business.
Dynamic Profiles are plain JSON files. Drop a file in ~/Library/Application Support/iTerm2/DynamicProfiles/ and iTerm2 picks it up without a restart:

}Generate that from your inventory, commit it, and you have a shareable, version-controlled connection list. Combine it with a well-organised ~/.ssh/config full of Host blocks and ProxyJump directives, and you are perhaps seventy per cent of the way to a connection manager, using tools you already trust.

Where it stops scaling
The seventy per cent is real. Here is the thirty per cent, in the order people usually hit it.
Flat lists do not survive growth. Tags help, but a profile list is fundamentally flat. There is no nesting, no per-environment separation you can see at a glance, no sense of "these forty hosts belong to this client and these six are the ones that page me."
Context does not live with the connection. The three commands you run every time you land on a box, the note about the four-minute restart, the file you always need to check first — none of that has a home. It ends up in a snippet manager, a Notion page, or your head. In Termio those attach to the connection itself, which is the difference between remembering and reading.
Credentials get improvised. iTerm2's password manager is Keychain-backed and good. But the moment you have passphrases, jump hosts, and per-client identities, most people end up with a mixture of agent, config, and habit that only they understand.
The setup is yours, not your team's. Dynamic Profiles are shareable in theory. In practice, sharing a terminal setup across a team means everybody being on macOS and everybody using iTerm2. Which brings us to the real dividing line.
iTerm2 is macOS-only. This is not a criticism — it is the reason iTerm2 can be as deep as it is. But if half your team is on Linux, or you personally switch between a Mac and a Windows machine with WSL, the setup you built cannot come with you. You maintain it twice, or you stop maintaining it.
What Termio adds
Termio is a terminal built around the fleet rather than the emulator:
- Workspaces with folders and favourites, so connection structure is visible instead of implied by naming.
- Per-connection scripts and files, so the runbook is attached to the machine it describes.
- Native credential storage on all three platforms — Keychain on macOS, Secret Service on Linux, Credential Manager on Windows — with the same behaviour everywhere.
- Split panes and a command composer for writing multi-line scripts in a real editor before running them.
- Plain-text workspace files you can commit, review, and hand to a new hire on any operating system.
- Standard OpenSSH keys and no proprietary formats, so the identities, agent, and habits you already have carry across unchanged.
- An AI copilot with terminal context, pointed at whichever OpenAI-compatible endpoint you configure, including a local model.
What Termio does not have, said plainly: tmux -CC control-mode integration, a Python scripting API, triggers, instant replay, or fifteen years of emulator edge cases. If your workflow depends on those, iTerm2 is not replaceable and you should not try.
The two-app pattern is fine
There is an assumption baked into comparison articles that you must pick one. Plenty of Mac developers run iTerm2 for local work — where its shell integration and tmux support earn their keep — and Termio for anything that involves other people's machines. Nothing conflicts. Both read the same ~/.ssh/config, both use standard OpenSSH keys, and neither takes ownership of anything the other needs.
If you are going to try this, the honest test is a week of noticing which one you open when an alert fires.
Who should stay on iTerm2
- You work on a handful of hosts and
~/.ssh/configcovers them. - Your remote sessions live in tmux and control mode is how you work.
- You have scripted iTerm2 with the Python API.
- You are the only person who needs your setup, and you only use macOS.
Who should look at Termio
- You have more hosts than you can name from memory, across environments or clients.

Is Termio a replacement for iTerm2? As an emulator, no. As the place your SSH work lives, often yes. Many people run both.

Final take
iTerm2 is the better terminal emulator and will likely stay that way; it has a decade of head start and a maintainer who cares about the details. Termio is the better answer to "which of these twelve tabs is production, and where is the runbook for it."
Pick iTerm2 if your terminal is the tool. Pick Termio if your servers are the tool and the terminal is how you reach them. Quite a few people, reasonably, keep both in the dock.
